It's no secret that consumers are paying more attention to the ingredients they're choosing to use in their home products. Throughout the last decade in the home fragrance industry, specifically with candles, paraffin wax has been a hot topic of discussion. While the running theme for a long time was to label paraffin wax as "toxic", some studies have shown little risk in using the wax for candles as long as it's "ultra-refined", while other studies still show paraffin wax to release benzene and toluene, which are considered as byproducts and known carcinogens. So.... why don't we use it in our candles? These are a few reasons we choose to use a higher quality and more sustainable product for our consumers:
Refined or not, paraffin wax is still derived from petroleum
This study suggests that ultra-refined paraffin wax emissions do not exceed the EPA or WHO safety limits due to the long refinement process it undergoes to remove impurities. This process is called fractional distillation which is essentially a method used by oil refineries. Paraffin wax is considered a part of the "residue fraction" which sits at the bottom of the fraction column and is quite literally referred to as the "bottom of the barrel" product. Despite this purification process, a lingering concern is the emission of benzene and toluene once paraffin wax is burned. While the emissions are considered low, they still exist.
Regardless of the refinement process it takes, we know there are many more sustainable and naturally eco-friendly ingredients available on the market and we chose to utilize them for our products instead of paraffin wax.
Eco Friendly?
If this is starting to sound like a full on environmental science lesson, then we hope you see where our decision lies in omitting this wax from our products. Paraffin wax is not considered a sustainable or an environmentally friendly product. We take pride in crafting our products in small batches and using fragrances that are free from parabens, phthalates, and CMR's - so to be quite frank, why wouldn't we use a high quality sustainable wax?
Why Coconut Soy Wax?
During our early journey as a candle company, we tested all forms of waxes and wax blends. We kept going back to the coconut soy blend for a few reasons:
Scent Throw
this is your candle's ability to distribute scent. Have you ever ordered a candle online, opened it and smelled nothing until it was burned? This is poor scent throw. Coconut soy wax is one of the best options if you want a scent throw WITHOUT burning and while burning. We have customers tell us all of the time that they don't even have to light their candles at times and they still smell the scents throughout their spaces.
Longer Burn Time - coconut soy wax can burn anywhere between 20-30% longer than straight paraffin wax. It boasts incredibly long burn times and even finishes. This allows us to give you a high quality product that's going to last.
Produces less soot and residue - one thing you'll never see coming from our candles is that dark filmy residue entering the air while burning. We take pride in our candle's ability to burn clean and even.
Sustainability - coconut soy wax is considered an eco-friendly product and is sustainable/biodegradable. Coconut wax in particular requires minimal processing and is derived from non-genetically modified coconuts. Coconuts are also considered a highly renewable crop which means less water and pesticides are used in the process.
and of course, it's non-toxic qualities - coconut soy wax is known to have minimal soot and emissions once burned. The blend also produces lower greenhouse gases like CO2 and has a lower melting point which helps to reduce the release of VOCs.
The choice for us is simple: high quality and clean burning products
